How To Stop Letting Fear Block You From Writing Your Story

Almost every student of mine has a fear of judgment that stops them from writing their stories and sharing them with the world.

They believe they will be disliked.

They believe they will be made fun of.

They believe they will be criticized by friends or family.

I have had all 3 of these possibilities happened to me. After writing about my abuse stories for over a year and sharing them on my social media, a family member reached out to me and told me to seek professional help and recreate a new group of friends so I’d stop writing about my ex.

Ouch.

Her words were a dagger to my heart.

My feelings were deeply hurt, and I can never unhear her words.

But I kept writing my stories, and eventually, the right people reached out to commend my courage.

The ones who fueled me to continue writing my trauma stories were women who also experienced abusive relationships.

My story gave them hope.

It was their silver lining.

The truth about fear of judgment is it will always be there. We have to learn to reframe this fear as our protector from harm, but we can never let it take the driver’s seat because we deserve to write our stories freely.

We have to accept judgment will happen in our lives. It’s a muscle we build to respond to the judgment of others when it happens.

Because it will happen.

But judgment is worth the sacrifice if your story reaches someone who feels seen, valid, and heard from reading your story.

Write for these people.

The courage to share your story takes building a strong relationship with yourself that your authenticity is the armor that can navigate the judgment of others.

We allow it to exist in our lives, but we never let it stop us from being ourselves.

We will build radical self-acceptance to live freely within our truths rather than be constrained by the perception of others.

Sincerely,

Mary
